Pillbox 035, Rocky Bay Beach [1939- ]

Date Place completed:
1939-01-01

This little Pillbox is located in the corner of the small beach behind the Bus depot in Shek O. If you have not been there before there is a little Bar called "The Back Beach Bar" which is a fantastic place to "Re-hydrate" after a walk or a day on the beach. It very reasonably priced with beers  $20/Bottle, right next to the beach, with a great view. Perfect before/after having a Thai meal.

I went for a little walk a couple of weeks ago from Tai Tam to Shek O. Along the way I took a couple of photos of the Pillbox right on the waters edge opposite Red Hill.

The only mention of the pillbox in Tony Banham's 'Not the slightest chance' is for 10am on 19th December 1941:

On P96 of Tony Banham's 'Not the slightest chance' there's a map of HK's pill boxes. It shows PB45 as due north of Mt Butler, about midway between the mountain and the shoreline. I haven't managed to find it yet.

Does anyone know it's location, and whether anything remains of it still?

Thanks to Rob Weir for locating this pillbox.

If you have any memories or photos of this pillbox that you are willing to share, please leave a comment below.

Pillbox 060, Central (VRC Steps) [1939-????]

Date Place completed:
1939-01-01

Thanks to Rob Weir for locating this pillbox. It was built on the steps of the Victoria Recreation Club (VRC). The VRC was built on the western edge of the reclamation for the Royal Navy's dockyard, and so the steps led down into the waters of Victoria Harbour.

If you have any memories or photos of the old VRC and the pillbox on its steps that you are willing to share, please leave a comment below.

The wartime map shows Pillbox 14 here.

Walking along Mills & Chung path I thought I could see a pillbox in the distance.

But when I walked over to take a look it's clear it was something much newer.

I think we can see a pillbox towards the eastern end of the beach in this Hedda Morrison Photo:

Pillbox 020, South Bay Beach [1939- ]

Date Place completed:

The wartime map shows it at the southern end of South Bay. I took a look, but couldn't see any sign of it.

At the northern end of the beach was this concrete block that looked about the right size:

The position of PB12 where the one legged Chinese Admiral Chan Chak's escape launch was shot up from as his party were escaping to find the 2nd MTB Flotilla.
