This photograph, taken about  in about 1921, shows the farming land which was  to be developed by the Kowloon Tong  Company , providing some 250 houses for familes at "affordable rentals and amid proper surroundings". In 1924 it was reported that the project had been delayed  by worker unrest but was still proceeding slowly with the first  twenty units perhaps ready by mid-year. Cutting across the picture from left to right is the Kowloon Canton Ralway embankment, seen curving as it approaches the Beacon Hill tunnel.

Charles Gesner van der Voort (1916-1991) worked at Holland-China Trading Company (HCHC), with offices in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Tientsin (Tianjin), Rotterdam and London. At the start of the company, in 1903, Willem Kien (1877-1970) started to work for HCHC in Shanghai and Hong Kong, later becoming director. In 1921 he left China and became director at the Rotterdam head office.

In 1920, Willem Kien received the shown decoration.

KCR Hall-Scott Motor Coach No.1

In May 1921 KCR ordered two sets of motor railcars with trailers from the Hall-Scott Motor Car Company of San Francisco. The intention was to use them on local services in New Territories where passenger demand did not justify long passenger trains with heavy locomotives.

The coaches were powered by 150 H.P six-cylinder internal combustion engines burning kerosene . The cylinders were 8 in. by 10 in. adapted for use by kerosene as a fuel. Th motor was equipped with a high-tension magneto and distributor with coil connected to two sets of spark plugs. The air compressor was  two-cylinder , water-cooled and powed directly from the engine.

Each coach could accommodate between 60 and 80 passengers depending on whether configured for a combination 1st and 2nd Class or 2nd and 3rd class passenger seats.

Each  powered car also came with a matching unpowered trailer coach. These units could also be connected up and towed by steam-locomotive passenger trains
