Gasometer Fire Westpoint 1934

On May 14 1934, the sudden collapse of a badly rusted steel gasometer caused a massive leak of coal gas into the air which then ignited. The heat from  huge conflagration cause horrendous burns to those in the immediate vicinity and also set a residential building opposite to the site on fire, also burning many people inside. All told, some 42 people died from their burns and other injuries and many more were seriously burned and scarred for life.

Most of the godowns from the 1950s are still there, but the whole area will be developed in less than 10 years from then.

Along Connaught Road (after 1900s reclamation), godowns were built in Sai Ying Pun and Shek Tong Tsui (the border between the two districts is a bit east of the "o" in Connaught on the map).

After reclamation works in Sai Ying Pun and Shek Tong Tsui were finished in 1901/02, godowns were built along the newly created praya (Connaught Road). Many marine lots originally were situated between Queen's Road and DesVoeux Road. After the 1900 reclamation, they were extended to the area between DesVoeux Road and Connaught Road. The following relates to the northern part of the lots.

On Marine Lots 198, 204, and 205 godowns were built in (estimated) 1903. These can be seen on a photo taken by Warren Swire:

The date of this photo is the early 1880's as Richmond Terrace on the top right of this picture has been finished.

Ball's Court is in the centre of the picture with the flag. To the left on the horizon is the Berlin Mission and the road between them  is High Street. The unmodified Civil Hospital building is on the right of the picture. Westbourne Villa is the large colonial house just above the Shanty town in the foreground, its inhabitants regularly complained about the smells coming form this location.
