An amazing year in Hong Kong

In 1957 I was half way through my National Service in the Royal Air Force. I’d spent the first year living in bleak wooden huts on various camps in England, but now I was bound for Hong Kong.  It’s strange to recall but I even had to look up ‘Hong Kong’ in an atlas to find out where I would be spending the last year of my National Service.  It wouldn’t be on yet another wooden-hutted camp in some remote and boring area of Britain; it would be to the exotic and mysterious Far East.  Yes, in the 1950s Hong Kong was still both.

The end of October 1957 saw me going abroad for the first time and flying for the first time in a wonderful if somewhat noisy B.O.A.C. Argonaut.  Three and a half days later it landed on

In addition, various paths were surfaced, roads formed and rainstorm damages repaired, whilst other works in the nature of maintenance were carried out at Mount Caroline, Kai Lung Wan, Hau Pui Loong, and Kowloon Tong.

Uploading an Image

Several weeks ago I uploaded an image and never did see it appear in "Whats New". I searched for it in Images & photos and found it there. Did I upload it in the wrong category? I think it is called a node? 22383?

This hasn't happened to me in the past.

How to add a connection, eg add a "child of" connection between daughter and mother

(You'll need to log in to see this feature.)

Introduction

On some pages you'll see a new "Add a connection" block on the right of the screen. Initially it appears on each "Person" page.

It lets you define connections with other pages on the site.  The first types of connections are to show the family relationships between two people, eg:

Stanley Camp Nominal Roll

This list was included in Waichow Intelligence Summary #13 of 6th December 1942.  (Major) J D Clague wrote: "A nominal roll of internees arrived at AHQ from 99 [Agent #99, Raymond Wong] on 3.12.42.  A copy is attached".

There is no information as to how it was compiled, or who actually brought it out from HK to Waichow.

A Record of the Actions of the Hongkong Volunteer Defence Corps

I have a copy of the book "A Record of the Actions of the Hongkong Volunteer Defence Corps in the Battle for Hong Kong" which I have scanned as a PDF document. It belonged to my father who left Hong Kong in March 1941. The book was given to him by his friend A. M. Remedios. Is there any one interested in getting this document? It is free of charge.

China Sugar Refinery - East Point 1870s

In trying to trace a possible relative listed in 1872 at "China Sugar Refinery East Point "- was that part of Jardine Matheson & Co ?

The books I've consulted don't go into this subsidiary company.

Did they ship sugar to Japan an bring back silk?  Does anyone know where to find any records of the ships, the voyages and the Masters?

thank you for your help,

c.1950 View across Wanchai

c.1950 view across Wanchai

Where: Looking out over Wanchai, with three landmarks to help us get our bearings:

  1. Southorn Playground is easiest to spot, the open area near the centre of the photo.
  2. At the bottom corner of the playground there is a

Hung Shek Mun village

Any information on the history of the village and immediate surroundings?

At the moment there's one building that looks like a former dwelling, and nearby a building that looks like some kind of power plant. Big steel door, two large exhaust pipes. A big trailer (the kind of that's normally pulled by a tractor or truck, too big to pull by hand) is parked inside a big banyan tree (i.e. the tree has grown over and through it).
