The Pokfulam Conduit

In early Hong Kong, you got your water from wells or streams. The first attempt to provide a more reliable source was the Pokfulam Reservoir, and its associated conduit. The conduit carried water round the island from the reservoir, following the hillside above Pokfulam Road, and ending near the junction of Albany Road and Robinson Road.

There are still plenty of signs of this old water system. Pokfulam reservoir is the most obvious, clear to anyone looking south from the Peak:

And the path of the old conduit above mid-levels is immortalised by the name of the road that was built on top of it:

Thomas, one of the regular contributors to Gwulo, has been using the 'Places' feature to document other parts of the conduit's route that are still visible. Here they are on a map and list. (If you know of any more, just create a Place and give it the tag Pokfulam Conduit, and it will automatically appear on the map and list below.)

The map is 'live': you can drag it around with your mouse, click the +/- buttons to zoom in and out, and click the Map/ Satellite/ Hybrid buttons to change the appearance of the map.

Bunkers - Stanley View - Stanley Mound

Reading books about the period December v1941 - I see a lot of references to Stanley View and Stanley Mound. Does anybody know where these to features are ? I assumed that Stanley View was where the bukers are 500 metres down Chung Hom Kok Road (now a garden centre) ? I assumed Stanley Mound is the hill on the Wilson Trail due north of Stanley ? Also coming down Stone Hill via steep ravine that comes out on the road from Chung Hom Kok to the Stanley intersection I came across serveral bunkers facing the ravine - I assume a Coy HQ either Royal Rifles or HKVDC - anybody know about these ?

Places - People - Compounds

Two questions have come up:

  1. How to handle places that in turn consist of other places?
  2. How to link people to places?

1. How to handle places that in turn consist of other places?

eg the old army land around Admiralty was known as Victoria Barracks, and deserves a Place. But that area also contained several landmarks (eg Murray House, HQLF, etc) that deserve their own Places. How does a visitor to the bigger 'container' Place know there is a lot of extra information available in the smaller 'contained' Places?

2011-03 RTHK's Morning Brew: Gwulo interview

If you're visiting us after hearing the interview on "Morning Brew" this morning, welcome to Gwulo.com! I've put a bunch of links below, so you can read more about any of the different subjects we discussed.

D. Jaffe and Tai Tam Tuk reservoir - historic photos - and query re marriage certificate

My grandfather was Daniel Jaffé (after whom Jaffe Road was named), who was a special engineer working for the Govt. on the Tai Tam Tuk reservoir completed in 1918.  I have historical photos of him, the building team, the opening ceremony etc.  Are you interested in my uploading them ?

Help with information and pictures

Hi

I was born in BMH Mount Kellett in November 1966. My father was royal signals and lived with Mum in Jubilee Buildings. We used to get the ferry to go swimming on Stonecutters island. I never managed to get back before we handed over the province and would be interested in any pictures from the time around when I was born.

Cheers

Chris

This is the latest Jurors List we're making searchable - here's how to join in, it'll only take around 20-30 minutes of your time.

The job is to take the previous year's list, then work through it page-by-page and edit in any changes so it matches this year's list.

Step 1. Check the comments below to see which was the last page someone has started typing. You'll work on the next page. eg if the last comment is "started page 7", you'll be working on page 8.
