I'm the grandson of the Broom family who lived in Hong Kong from 1920 to 1960. Whilst I grew up in New Zealand I lived in Taiwan and Shanghai between 1993 and 1999, making frequent visits to Hong Kong at that time, and learning mandarin for my work. I'm currently finalising a book about my family's escape from Hong Kong's Japanese occupiers.
