Thanks for posting this, it is very interesting.  I note that Chater was building a house for Mr. Stewart-Lockhart near the residence of Dr. Adams.  All this activity, and so much choice but 10 years later Chater decided on mid levels for Marble Hall!

Liz, that's an interesting point. Given that he could probably have lived just about anywhere he wanted, any idea why he chose mid-levels instead of the Peak?

Regards, David

Hi David,

My guess is that that plot was right next to a natural break in the rock formation (and still is) which he sussed would be impossible to built on, thus he'd never have close neighbours on his right hand side. He systematically bought up neighbouring small plots on his left hand side to enlarge his footprint and of course the old reservoir was already on his land behind him, so no one could built immediately at the back of him.....canny or what???

I know the French Consulate General chose Old Peak Road because it was 12 minutes by chair to Central.

Marble Hall is about the same altitude, giving panoramic views, and good access to town for business.

My father told a story about living on the Peak. When it was covered in cloud, he would ring the office to find out what the weather was like, so he could dress appropriately.
