Crashes at Kai Tak were not uncommon in the 1950s. Piston engined planes were generally not as reliable as turbo props and jets and the runways in use before the one extending into the harbour was built were notoriously difficult ones for pilots. When Andrew Suddaby arrived by B.O.A.C. Argonaut the pilot made the comforting (?) announcement that Kai Tak was the most exciting and trickiest airport he knew.
