Edgar and Kathe de Chaffoy, with daughter Kiki, visiting the Resolute. Hamburg-Amerikanische Packetfahrt-Actien-Gesellschaft (HAPAG), often referred to as Hamburg America Line, was a transatlantic shipping enterprise established in Hamburg, in 1847. Kathe was from Hamburg, so possibly they used HAPAG ships when travelling home.

1931 S. S. Resolute World Cruise
As announced in the newspapers of the day, the S. S. Resolute was on a globe-girdling cruise. Arriving from Manila on 21 March, the steamship departed for Keelung on 23 March on its return journey to New York. The photo would have been taken during this period.
An aside. The Sincere Department Store launced an innovative scheme for attracting tourists off the boat. Tourists were issued a special invitation folder with an accompanying ticket for a rickshaw ride to the store with the instruction: "Tell the rickshaw puller 'Sin Cee'." The purpose of the enterprise was to enable the tourist to visit the store without having to change money into local currency, that being done at the store for purchases made and meals taken.

Thanks - that's fascinating. Hong Kong didn't take long to be learn to be clever in persuading tourists to part with their money... of whatever denomination.
