Back in the 1990s, the steel  security bars and gate erected at the portal  were less substantial. The padlock was missing and the gate was held closed by a piece of wire. If you  "accidentally" leaned on it with your foot....it would give way and `hey presto'  it would open. We walked in about 400 yards but as it got darker it began to get tricky to walk further because of the pot holes. Also a non-ending shower of dirty water was dripping on you from the tunnel ceiling. But at least I claim I have wallked a fair length of Beacon Hill tunnel...
