Re: Jardine Matheson Noon Day Gun
Hi there,
When Gloucester Road was still the water front back in the 1960's and after this gun was exchanged with the mentioned three pounder, it was mounted in the approximate location of present day Excelsior Hotel/World Trade Centre.
I lived in Paterson Street from 1964. Standing between the gun and my home was a godown block. Even for a three pounder it was exceptionally L-O-U-D. You could imagine how loud this original gun used to be.

12 o'clock gun
Hard to believe but back then, water in the Causeway Bay typhoon shelter next to the gun was clear as a resort lagoon. Standing on the shoreline, you could see fish, algae, boulders and everything else lying at the sea bottom.
Re: Fresh seafood at the water front
Hi there,
Right you are. We used to walk along Paterson Street with Mom to the water front and purchase fish or shrimps from the fishermen around. The further reclaimation in the late 1960's put an end to that. The shelter (not just this one) become as murky and smelly as can be.
Best Regards,

Sampan Cruise
Not exactly 80's Love Boat TV show, but at the end of Patterson St was this little pier. Throughout the hot summer after the sun went down, you could hop on these environmental friendly muscle power sampans for hire all decked out with X'mas lights & equipped with snack bar for a cruise in the harbour. Most cruise patrons were young couples out for a romantic evening under the stars.
Wow
That sounds absolutely amazing. I wish more films (or even games) were set in old Hong Kong. It's such a fascinating place.
