When was the Rolex sign removed from the top of the building in Central?  Which building rooftop was it on?   It's sad because that display was so much part of HK just like the TST Railway Station Clock Tower, the Peak Tram, and the Star Ferry itself.

It must be later than 1975 because the sign was still there when I returned to HK in 1981.  When I came back to HK again in 2007, it was gone.  Do you recognize what building that the sign was on- the whole building might have been demolished and replaced?

I think the building with the Rolex sign was the Realty Building.

The Rolex sign appears to have disappeared from my pictures about the time the One IFC Building was constructed directly in front of the Realty Building which blocked the advertisment's visibilty from the harbour and potential customers. IDJ

Certainly before 1956 when the Star Ferry Terminal was completed.

I thought I had written a reply but somehow it got lost in the cyberspace.

First of all, I'd like to thank you for posting the two recent pictures depicting the Rolex sign on the roof of a much older and shorter building. 

I can't imagine how many millions of dollars per year is required to put up a sign like that in Central overlook the harbor if Rolex decided to continue advertising like before......whew!

With all due respect, I don't understand the difference between posting as an anon or to ID ourselves who we are.  I can see if this was a personal or a dating website, but this is just an informational forum where we all share pictures and info about HK.  If you have the answer(s) or picture(s), post them; why would you care who the OP was.......unless there are members in this forum whom you wish to ignore?

I can understand Moddsey's point. Is "Anonymous" the default for this site (I don't know)? The problem is an earlier post mentioned losing a comment in cyberspace, but how are we to know - out of all the anonymous comments - which one you are referring to?

Anyway, I'm going to make an incredible stab in the dark and assume you meant this one:

however, because it was written by 'anonymous' I can't say for sure. Perhaps you would like to confirm. Anyway, I'm going to assume you are the same person and therefore solve the mystery of your disappearing post (i.e. you posted it in another thread).If you had signed in properly (perhaps identifying yourself as anonymous1 so as not to confuse you with all the other anons) then you would've been able to track your posting history and save you having to repeat your comment.

There's nothing sinister going on, it's just that so many people post as 'anonymous' it's difficult to know which one is which and, as illustrated, may lead to some confusion.

Whichever you prefer! The main goal of the site is to encourage people to share their knowledge of Hong Kong's history, and it's your choice how you much information you leave about yourself.

If you choose to create a User ID and log in you get several benefits:

  • Personalised tracking of messages: This is what Phil describes. As an anonymous user when you visit the Tracker page, you see a list of all content on the site, newest at the top. If you're logged in, it highlights which of them are new since you last logged in.
    Logged-in users also see an extra tab, 'My Recent Posts'. That lists everything (forum post, articles, photos, etc) that you've ever written, or left a comment on. It's the quickest way to find things you've written before, and check if anyone has replied to them.
  • No more 'Captchas'! To cut down on spam, anonymous users have to re-type a captcha (some wavy-looking text) whenever they submit something to this site. Once you've logged in, no more captchas!
  • More editing options: As an anonymous user, once you click 'save', your comment / forum post / etc becomes read-only. If you want to make any changes, you need to contact me and I'll make the change on your behalf - more work for both of us. If you're logged in, you can go back and edit your content after you've clicked save (though with comments, once someone replies to your comment, it can't be edited).

A less obvious benefit is that other readers can recognise when you post. It helps us get to know what you're interested in. In the longer run that can help us bring things to your attention you might be interested in.

Finally, it's worth noting there are more options than simply Anonymous or logged in.  When you write something here you can identify yourself as:

  1. Anonymous
  2. Use a pen-name, not logged in
  3. Use a pen-name as user ID, logged in
  4. Use your real name, not logged in
  5. Use your real name as user ID, logged in
