Thomson photo
I don't doubt the date of this engraving but it is copied from a John Thomson photograph that itself is usually dated sometime around 1868 to 1871.

Re: Thompson Photo
Greetings Adam,
Dated 1881 from an Italian Publication, I also have an other version C1874.
It was common to reproduce Woodblock engravings of Photographs, these could be printed for newspapers and independent publications, not until the process of lithographs could the actual photograph be reproduced in the printing process.
Re: Thompson Photo
IO, I think Adam's suggesting the 'Date picture taken' would be better set to something like 1870, as that's approximately the date of the view we're looking at.
Another tip - I usually aim to only list places that are visible in the photo/engraving, so I'd leave Pedder Building off. A better choice would be the Place 'General Post Office (Cnr Pedder / QRC) [1846-1911]', which was standing when this engraving's photo was taken.
Thanks for posting these. Previously, we didn't have much older than 1900. With your engravings, and HF Siu's photos, it's good to start learning about the older buildings.
Regards, David
