The 31st Mar 1932 edition of the Edinburgh Evening News contains a photo of him (in uniform of a Drummer in the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders) and mentions him being a Sergeant in the HKP and having been awarded the Police Medal the previous year for 'conspicuous service' in 'the riot', as well as a life saving medal by the Governor of Hong Kong.
