Caine Road re-numbering

From time to time we struggle to work out a building's location on Caine Road, because the houses were re-numbered several times. eg look at the thread about Buxey Lodge. It quotes a piece of PRO research that says street numbers changed in 1903, and again "around 1934". Looking at some of the maps we have, we can check the numbers as follows:
- Lot numbers: 1924 map of Central
- Pre-1903 numbers: 1897 map of HK island north shore, UK National Archive ref MPHH 1-412
- 1903-1934 numbers: 1909 map of HK island north shore
- Present day numbers: HK Government's GeoInfo Map.
Here are some examples from recent discussions:
Inland Lot number | Pre-1903 house number | 1903-1934 house number | 1934-present house number | Notes |
North side of road | ||||
101 (partial) | 19 | 33 | 85 | 1897 map shows terrace of four houses, 19, 21, 23, 25. |
94 | 31 | 47 | 99 | Buxey Lodge |
South side of road | ||||
151 | 16 | 34 | 50 | Douglas Villa |

Formatting
Pasting tables into the website often has odd effects. If you want to fit the table into the width of the page (example below), you can click the "Source" button at the top-left of the editor, and delete the lines <colgroup>, </colgroup> and any lines between them. But I wouldn't worry too much, the table as you've pasted it is still clear to see, and very useful as it is.
Thanks David, I have edited
Thanks David, I have edited the table and it looks much better
The bad news is that they changed the numbers on Caine Road (and lots of other streets) regularly in the period 1890- WW1. It seems that almost every time a new house was build, all the numbers above the new building changed. The postmans job must have been a nightmare!
Once I have the full set I will post them here but in the meantime don't rely on the above being complete.
Caine Road Renumbering Complete
I have posted all the renumbering I have from 1883 to present for Caine Road. It looks correct to me but please comment if you see any mistakes or know the names of any of the buildings that were at the above numbers/lots
Thanks for pulling this
Thanks for pulling this information together, it is a very useful resource.

House names of 25 & 27 Caine Road 1905-09
The Rate Book record of the odd-numbered houses 1-47 Caine Road for 1905-1909 gives only two named houses: no. 25 is Elgin Villa, credited to Linstead & Davies; no. 27 is Glenwood, credited to E.R. Belilos.

Thanks for the information
Thanks for the information Jill
I have created a place for Elgin Villa here.
Interestingly the location of Glenwood in 1901 was called Kingsclere. A new Kingsclere was opened between 1901-1905 on Kennedy Road here also owned by E R Belios, so it seems the old family home on Caine Road was renamed Glenwood between 1901 to 1905
Are the historical rate books available anywhere online?
Rate Books not online
Alas, the Rate Books are not online. They can only be consulted at the PRO. It would take a lot of man hours to scan them.
E.R. Belilios & R.E. Belilios
I see that E.R. Belilios died in London on 11 November 1905. Looking closer, although the Rate Book for 1905-06 records him as the rate payer of no. 27 for that year. The 'R' of his initials is deleted for 1906-07 and then R.E. Belilios (Exec.) is recorded for 1907-09. Raphael Emanuel was the son of Emanuel Raphael. I wonder if the name change of the house had anything to do with Emanuel Raphael's death. I haven't seen the earlier records.

Caine Road numbering changes 1904-1908?
Herostratus - have I missed your final list of number changes of Caine Road? I can't find no. 52 on your previous list. My grandmother, Mrs. C.E. Warren is listed at no. 33 in 1904 which was her step-mother's and father's address, but at no. 52 in 1908 where her step-mother was also listed. Do you think this might be the same house with a changed number? I must have failed to check the Rate Book for 1908 when I was in Hong Kong and able to do so. Was no. 33 the so-called "Le Caine Mansion" in 1904?
There was an error in the
There was an error in the above spreadsheet on 17th February 1903, No 52 had been written as No 53. I have now corrected this.
In 1904 No 33 was on the corner of Peel and Caine where today the Kwong Fook building is. There is a place for it here
In 1908 No 52 was where Sussex Court is today - between Castle and Caine. This house was buiit on the site of the original Craigengower house
There were definitely different buildings as odd numbers are on the North (downhill) side of Caine Road and even numbers are on the South (uphill) side
33 and 52 Caine Road
Thanks for placing these two houses, Herostratus. I did think it unlikely that an odd numbered house would have turned into an even-numbered one.
