Here is what I think the writer wanted it to read:

 has several meanings and in this case they are "stage of a journey" and "standard".  The author meant it to say "(our) standard/(altitude?) (is) high", hence .

means will, determination, aspiration, ambition, so 志遠 is "(our) aspiration (is) far (and beyond).

Yes, you are probably correct.  Chinese normally read from the right to left.

Thanks ahlam for the reply.  I think the word sequence is similar to a school's motto; and read from right in those old days.  Regards, Peter
