Comments

Hugh Goldie was Lance-Sergeant 145 in the Hong Kong Police and at the time of the Japanese invasion was attached to Upper Levels police station and later to Aberdeen. In "Prisoner of the Turnip Heads" p128 George Wright-Nooth suggests that Goldie was attacked and killed by a large fish while swimming at Stanley soon after the Japanese surrender. This is incorrect as Goldie was repatriated and rejoined the HKP post-war.

Wright-Nooth was presumably confusing Goldie with Herbert Winkfield Jackson (L/Sgt 178) who was killed by a shark on the 23rd September 1945, an incident which was the subject of a report in the SCMP.
