Dr. J. A. R. Selby was born in Port William, Wigtownshire in 1900. He died at Cheadle Hulme, Cheshire on February 15, 1951.

He joined the Colonial Medical Service in 1930 and went to Hong Kong as a medical officer, later being promoted to health offcier (social hygiene).

In the 1920s he played rugby for Scotland.

Thanks for the pointer. He's listed in the 1939 Blue Book as:

  • Health Officer (Venereal Diseases)
  • John Alexander Robertson Selby, M.B., B.S., Ch. B. (Edin.).
  • Appointed 28th Nov., 1930.

I accidentally came across my father's name on your website. Some details need amending:

  • He only played two matches for Scotland, both in 1920 he also played for Yorkshire in 1926 when doing his hospital year at Bradford RI.
  • dob should read 26 July 1900

Sincerely
John Selby

Thanks John, I've corrected his dob. Is there anything else you can add about his time in Hong Kong?

Regards, David
