Gough Hill Quarters, 275 & 276 The Peak [1925-c.1985]

Current condition:
Demolished / No longer exists
Date Place completed:
c.1925-04-01 (Month, Day are approximate)
Date Place demolished:
c.1985-01-01 (Year is approximate)

"Gough Hill Quarters" were mentioned in the 1932 PWD Report (in connection with gas being laid to the houses} and the mid-1950's map at www.gwulo/atom/22205,  which gave the address as 275 & 276 The Peak. I've been unable to establish the year of construction, but the 1924, map at www.gwulo.com/atom/13017 does not show them (later edit), suggesting the Quarters came after 1924. On the assumption that the Quarters were built sometime between 1924 and 1932, I've chosen the mid-point, 1928, as the year of construction.

The early 1960's map at www.gwulo.com/atom/15993, and the 1967 photo at www.gwulo.com/atom/21078, show buildings with the same "footprint" as the Quarters in the 1950's map. In 1985 the site was developed into the residential developement named "Orient Crest". In the absence of evidence (known to me at this stage) that the site was redeveloped between 1967 and 1985, I've chosen 1985 as the year of demolition. Corrections welcome

The Quarters also appear as the building on the right side of the ridgeline in www.gwulo.com/atom/12931.

The PWD Reports for 1923-5 describe the construction of these Government Quarters.

Para.94 of the 1923 Report mentions that construction of "two detached houses with servants quarters between" commenced in July. Each house was to be of two floors and would contain seven rooms.

Para.95 of the 1924 Report states that site preparation had been completed and erection of the buildings had begun.

Para. 96 of the 1925 Report noted that the "West House" was completed on 31st March and the East House on 31st May. The area to the north of the buildings was laid out as two tennis courts.

I've changed the year of completion to 1925 and used April as the month of completion as its the mid-point between completion of the two houses.
