1871 Census shows him as coast guard boat man age 37 born in Torquay Devon England living in Cairnryan Street Inch Wigtownshire. He is there with three of his children and his wife Jane Margaret Blake nee Evans. She was also born in England in Rochester Kent (1846 - 1908). In 1891 he was a pensioner and officer
