Hong Kong, group of young men relaxing, ca. 1900

Dear reader,

Do you perhaps recognise the patch of land, somewhere near The Peak (is my guess)?

And what about the structure: straw, held up by poles. Any thoughts on what this is?

Regardless of these questions, the young men in this photo are having a good time on a sunny day. Please enjoy it!

Kind regards,

Pieter

Postcard Hong Kong; Greetings from Hongkong Chinese Fortune Teller

Dear reader,

Please visit Flickr and read the caption to the photo. It has some background on the work fortune tellers did in China a century ago.

If you can help with translating the Chinese text on the table cloth, I would appreciate it very much.

Kind regards,

Pieter Lommerse

Tennis Match, Braeside Hong Kong, 1909

The person who made this photo, Willem Kien, was director at the company which Charles worked for, Holland-China Trading Company (HCHC). HCHC had offices in Rotterdam, London, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Tientsin (Tianjin). He lived at The Peak. On Gwulo.com, I found the address of Braeside: 20 MacDonnell Road, also at The Peak. For Hong Kong residents, it must have been an excellent place for leisure.

Charles in Shanghai cover

Charles Gesner van der Voort worked in Shanghai for Holland-China Trading Company (HCHC), which had offices in Hong Kong and Tientsin (Tianjin) also. I am preparing a book about Charles and his friends. While doing research for the book, many people contributed photos, several of which can be found on Flickr. Quite a few photos relate to Hong Kong, from the 1900s to 1930s. Please enjoy and I look forward to your comments and additional information you may have.

Hong Kong - Macau steamliner Fat Shan (1887-1933) in Hong Kong

Charles Gesner van der Voort (1916-1991) worked for Holland-China Trading Company (HCHC) in Shanghai; it also had offices in Hong Kong and Tientsin (Tianjin). One of its first directors, Mr. Willem Kien, worked in China from 1898. After HCHC was founded in 1903, he worked for the company in Hong Kong and Shanghai. In 1921, he left China and worked for the head office in Rotterdam, at Diergaardelaan 36, until 1948, when the company was obtained by Internatio.
