Cricket at Sek Kong

The lengthy fax would arrive about once a week, sent to all cricketers of the Chinese University, announcing an upcoming match and asking if we could play. Sent by the captain David Gilkes, the Bursar, who didn’t use email.

Cricket Group, ca. 1910 Hong Kong

Charles Gesner van der Voort (1916-1991) worked for Holland-China Trading Company (HCHC) in Shanghai.
The photo was made by one of its first directors, Willem Kien, of a group of cricket players, while he worked for the Hong Kong office.

Taken at the HKU sports ground at the annual Past v. Present cricket match early in 1954.  It was a multi-use ground and soccer and hockey were also played on it, so the cricket was always played on a pitch covered with matting to try and disguise the lumps and bumps.
