Charles Gesner van der Voort had started his career in Rotterdam, at Holland-China Trading Company (HCHC). In 1938, he went to Shanghai for the firm. The Japanese interned him, and most other Dutch nationals, from 1943-45. In camp, he met his wife Nancy and they married after the war. After a leave in The Netherlands, they returned to the Orient, where Charles continued to work for HCHC in Hong Kong.

One of its first directors, Mr. Willem Kien, worked in China from 1898. After HCHC was founded in 1903, he worked for the company in Hong Kong and Shanghai. Nearly got it. By the end of 2002 the new Richmond Houses A-D are under construction, so second generation Richmond House was probably demolished in 2001 (in November 2000 it was still standing). That was an error, second generation was already gone by end of 1999! <Read more ...>
