"Fancy a cuppa?", 1909 picnic outside Hong Kong

Charles worked for Holland-China Trading Company (HCHC) in Shanghai.
The photo shows one of its first directors, Willem Kien, with a group of friends in the Hong Kong countryside.

Willem Kien is listed as William Kien on several juror's lists on gwulo.com. E.g.  the 1906 list, where he is shown as manager of Holland China Handels Co., situated in Alexandra Buildings. In 1915, also his house address is displayed in the list: 7 Stewart Terrace, The Peak.

Tennis Match, Braeside Hong Kong, 1909

The person who made this photo, Willem Kien, was director at the company which Charles worked for, Holland-China Trading Company (HCHC). HCHC had offices in Rotterdam, London, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Tientsin (Tianjin). He lived at The Peak. On Gwulo.com, I found the address of Braeside: 20 MacDonnell Road, also at The Peak. For Hong Kong residents, it must have been an excellent place for leisure.

Charles in Shanghai cover

Charles Gesner van der Voort worked in Shanghai for Holland-China Trading Company (HCHC), which had offices in Hong Kong and Tientsin (Tianjin) also. I am preparing a book about Charles and his friends. While doing research for the book, many people contributed photos, several of which can be found on Flickr. Quite a few photos relate to Hong Kong, from the 1900s to 1930s. Please enjoy and I look forward to your comments and additional information you may have.

Shanghai

I apologise in advance if this is a misuse of this site but does anyone know of any similar forum or group for mainland China and specifically Shanghai? Failing that does anyone know any officals in the Overseas Office in Shangahi? I am trying to trace land transactions for 2 specific addresses from 1946 but for obvious reasons there does not appear to be an equivalent to the Hong Kong Land Registry.

Many thanks,

Kim

This photo was taken in the late 1920s or early 1930s. I am fairly sure it was in Shanghai. The lone woman in the photos is Nora Hunter, and her father Tobias Hunter is also in the photo fifth from left side. Others in the photo may be Alexander Samson, Ernest Samson, Pete Pederson. The photo could also show Thomas Cock. The crates in the background could have been from tea, butter, or some food commodity as Geddes was an importer of butter and dairy products from Australia and elsewhere.

The S.S. Tungchow , 2,104 tons was built in 1914 and for many years served on the Shanghai - Tientsin ( 天津 Tianjin ) route.
