Coronation 12th May 1937 First Day Cover

This first day cover for the 1937 Coronation was sent to John Edward Barrow (my great-uncle) at the China Light and Power Company premises on Tai Wan Road in the Hung Hom area.  He worked at the Hok Un power station from 1921 to 1938.  In 1938 he returned to England in view of the changing political situation.  Many of his friends who stayed in Hong Kong did not survive the war years.

My Great Uncle, John Edward Barrow, was an Engine Room Artificer in the Royal Navy.  In 1919 he was assigned to HMS Titania and he sailed from England to Hong Kong.  According to my family members, he spent a lot of time aboard submarines.  After HMS Titania docked in Hong Kong in April 1920, he left the Royal Navy and settled in Hong Kong.

A poor quality image.

Repair crew are sitting on a boiler's chain-grate which feeds coal into/under the boiler. The Japanese were operating the power station's boilers with wood instead of coal by the end of the war.
