Lt Randy Gordon-Duff was an officer on HM Submarine L3 in the 4th Submarine Flotilla on the China Station 1928-1929. The task of the flotilla was to chase down pirates up and down the China coast, mainly around Wei-Hai-Wei, Bia's Bay and Hong Kong. Gordon-Duff was promoted to Lt Cmdr and returned to Hong Kong commanding HMS Proteus in 1939-1940. He died when HMS Culver which he was commanding in 1942 was hit and sunk by two torpedoes off Cape Clear while escorting a convoy. He married Mollie Olga Sinclair in 1937. <Read more ...>

Samuel Barff was a Hong Kong civil servant, shown living at No.13 Castle Road ("The Hut") in the 1884 directory. He came to Nagasaki, Japan in 1894 with his wife Katherine (Kate) and rented the house at No.15 Minamiyamate in the Nagasaki Foreign Settlement. The couple called the house "Cliff Field." Samuel was bedridden during most of his stay in Nagasaki. He died on August 25, 1897 at the age of sixty-nine and was buried at Sakamoto International Cemetery. Jeannie trained as a nurse at Perth Royal Infirmary before going to Hong Kong in 1938 (approx). She was interned in Stanley Civilian Camp following the fall of Hong Kong in December 1941. Her fiance, Fred Woodhead was interned as a POW in Sham Shui Po before being transported on the Lisbon Maru to Ossaka #1 Camp. After the war ended Jeannie and Fred returned to Dundee and were married 3 weeks later. Fred returned to Hong Kong and Jeannie joined him after the birth of their son in 1947.
