Does anyone know what the big building with the Chinese characters on was?

I'm not clear if the temporary tower was built on top of that building, or if it was built on across one of the roads behind it (Wing Wo Street or Gilman Street).

The image shows the English Methodist Church which was situated at j/o QRE and Kennedy Road in 1937.  Adjacent to its west side was the old Wanchai School premises.  Only part of the pitched roof can be seen.   There were rows of trees along QRE in front of the school boundary short wall.
