Bruce was one of the lucky ones who flew both ways by B.O.A.C..  Charter flights with companies such as Airwork came next, the R.A.F. Transport Command flights next and, bottom of the list, would be the troopships.

Bruce's flight home was in one of B.O.A.C.'s Britannias, Their turbo prop engines were significantly quieter than most propellor planes and they were known as the whispering giants.  Unfortunately for B.O.A.C. they rapidly became obsolescent when the jets came on stream and monopolised the long haul routes.

BOAC half-bus to Kai Tak from the Peninsula Hotel

Places shown in this photo:

This BOAC bus is parked outside the Peninsula Hotel on what is now a very busy corner.

The hotel had run its own bus before WW2 for various airlines denoting which one by hanging appropriate signboards on its outside. No pictures of one have yet emerged, although there is a newsprint clipping announcing its arrival in HK in the late 1930s.

"ARE WE THERE YET"

Date picture taken (to nearest decade for older photos):
1955

Next time the kids ask "Are we there yet?" an hour after taking off, show them this SCMP advert from when the flight to London took 39 hours and 5 minutes. The advert's copywriter seems proud of the extra 5 minutes. I doubt that the flight time could be predicted so precisely with many stops on the way all capable of contributing to delay.

BOAC Air or Ground Hostess-1949

Date picture taken (to nearest decade for older photos):

Places shown in this photo:

This cropped image shows what appears to be another local BOAC girl in the launch heading for the airport from a flying boat. It is not known if she was air crew or a ground hostess. Possibly a Batley girl.
