Office staff Holland-China Trading Company, Shanghai 1921

In 1921, director Willem Kien (front row, centre), left the Shanghai office for the Rotterdam office of Holland-China Trading Company (Holland-China Handelscompagnie, HCHC). For this occasion, a office staff group photo was made. In 1921, the office was in Kiangse Road.

At the time, Charles Gesner van der Voort (1916-1991) was five years old, still playing in the streets of Dordrecht. In December 1938, after an internship at the Rotterdam office, he would sail for Shanghai and arrive in January 1939. <Read more ...>

Tea room Rocamadour, Rickmansworth, 1957

Philip Harding Klimanek (1883-1965) was born in the Czech Republic, at the time his place of birth was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire. In ca. 1905 he started to work for Holland-China Trading Company, in Hong Kong.

In 1939, when Charles Gesner van der Voort arrived in Shanghai to work for the company, he was Charles' superior. In a letter home he wrote: "Played chess with Klimanek in the French Club" [translation Pieter Lommerse, the French Club was Le Cercle Sportif Français, a fashionable place to be in the 1930s and it still exists today]. <Read more ...>

Historical Amsterdam: 1696 pharmacy Van der Meulen & Chinatown

Taking a walk from Shipping House (Het Scheepvaarthuis) at Prins Hendrikkade, to Oude Kerk, you pass the Bantammerbrug, where you find the pharmacy Van der Meulen, in use as a pharmacy since 1696.

The wall above the pharmacy has a facing brick with a 'yawner', which can sometimes still be seen above historical pharmacies in the Netherlands.

The Japanese interned him, and most other Dutch nationals, from 1943-45. In camp, he met his wife Nancy and they married after the war. After a leave in The Netherlands, they returned to the Orient, where Charles continued to work for HCHC in Hong Kong.
