This photograph is the second of two sent to me soon after the 75th anniversary of VJ Day by a cousin of mine. Her father, Air Commodore Gilbert Bartholomew, was present at the ceremony, representing the Royal Air Force. I believe this is the location of the Japanese surrender ceremony at Government House on 12 September 1945. Coincidentally, I took this photograph standing in roughly the same spot as the photographer who took the 'Hong Kong Japanese Surrender 2' image. It was taken on a Government House open day in less turbulent times than in 1945. <Read more ...>

Photo made by Willem Kien, director at Holland-China Trading Company (HCHC), which was Charles Gesner van der Voort’s (1916-1991) employer. The company had offices in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Guangzhou (Canton) and Tientsin (Tianjin).

Hong Kong 1930s

Charles Gesner van der Voort (1916-1991) worked at Holland-China Trading Company (HCHC), with offices in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Tientsin (Tianjin), Rotterdam and London. At the start of the company, in 1903, Willem Kien (1877-1970) started to work for HCHC in Shanghai, later becoming director. In 1921 he left China and became director at the Rotterdam head office.

Philip Harding Klimanek in the United Kingdom, ca. 1960

Philip Harding Klimanek (1883-1965) was born in the Czech Republic, at the time his place of birth was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire. In ca. 1905 he started to work for Holland-China Trading Company, in Hong Kong.

In 1939, when Charles Gesner van der Voort arrived in Shanghai to work for the company, he was Charles' superior. In a letter home he wrote: "Played chess with Klimanek in the French Club" [translation Pieter Lommerse, the French Club was Le Cercle Sportif Français, a fashionable place to be in the 1930s and it still exists today]. <Read more ...>

Holland-China Trading Company dinner, Hong Kong 1950

Charles Gesner van der Voorts' (1916-1991) friends Phil Beekmeijer and his wife Ans and Karel Baggerman and his wife attended a dinner for the occasion of Philip Harding Klimanek leaving Holland-China Trading Company (HCHC) in Hong Kong.

The photo was taken by Ming Yuen Studio, 6 Queen's Road Central, Hong Kong.

View from Java-China-Japan Line m.s. Tjisadane arrving in Hong Kong, May 1937

Charles Gesner van der Voort (1916-1991) was part of a group of Dutch bachelors in pre-war Shanghai. Another member of this group was David van Gelderen (1908-1990), originally from Rotterdam. He arrived in Shanghai in 1933, working for Unilever, a merger of the operations of Dutch Margarine Unie and British soap maker Lever Brothers. <Read more ...>

Passenger list Java-China-Japan Line m.s. Tjisadane, 19 May 1937, Jakarta (Batavia) to Shanghai via Hong Kong and Xiamen (Amoy). It contains the name of David van Gelderen, returning from a long leave in the Netherlands.
