Tack Ching At Un Chau Street (2014)

Looks like the longest class detention on record!

After 60 years of absence, this was a special occassion to enter this building on the south side of Un Chau Street one more time where my father taught secondary section literature, math and ball-room dancing to his students in this exact room in the early 1950s.   My primary classes were across the street, on the north side of Un Chau Street,  and us boys ventured here duing lunch break.

Tack Ching Primary School 1951 class photo  with teachers and Sisters, original site on the corner of Castle Peak Road and Un Chau Street.  Readers my generation will remember the two trees and the fence that protected them from naughty boys like me.  The school had a metal staircase connecting the playground with the third level, I believe for fire safety reason.  The trees were still there when I entered school the following year.  Regards,  Peter

The building was later converted to Tack Ching Primary Section, and the secondary section moved across the street on Un Chau Street.  They would exchange places again after a new building was constructed for the secondary section.

My Tack Ching Primary School 德貞小學 was located on the southwest corner of the junction of Yen Chow Street and Castle Peak Road, that is, on the north side of Un Chau Street. It had two entrances, one on Castle Peak Road facing the Garden Bakery, and the other on Un Chau Street.  When I attended primary section in 1952-54, classes took place in this building and the secondary section was across the street on the south side of Un Chau Street.

The Vertical louver and horizontal sun break are applied in green buildings now. They are typically found in schools in Hong Kong from 1940s to 1970s.

No date given. My guess for the black/white photo are the 1960's.

TWGHs Primary School [1958- ]

Date Place completed:
1958-07-01

Hi there,

The Date is just a guess.  The school website (unfortunately only in Chinese) just stated 1958 with no specific date.  The school was originally called TWGHs The Third Primary School (東華三院皇后大道東第三小學) on Hong Kong Island.  It was rename to TWGHs Li Chi Ho Primary School (東華三院李賜豪小學) in 1971.

Best Regards,

T
