Can anyone identify this round metal object which is 15 inches in radius and 21 inches high together with the wooden stand? Likewise the meaning of the Chinese characters and the symbolism of the flower border at the base. It has been found among the effects of Cicely Warren, late widow of my uncle Leslie Warren. It was a heavy item to take to England with her in 1938 when Leslie evacuated his family. Cicely then took it to Canada when she emigrated there after the war. Ltd., referred to in my post below, from a personal letter of my uncle Leslie Beal Warren, written on 2nd May 1941, two days after moving from his company's office in the St George's Building back down to Wanchai. The D’Aquinos or De Aquinos were a prominent Macanese family dating back to the eighteenth century and who emigrated to Hong Kong in the late nineteenth century. IDJ posted a 1912 ad for CE Warren & Co. as "monumentalists". This is a photo of my grandfather, Charles Warren's own grave in St Michael's Catholic cemetery, seemingly newly erected in 1923. When his son, Leslie, took over the management of the company in June 1923 on his father's death, this would have been the first gravestone he and his brother Arthur, an artist, would have designed. This is apparently a matshed at Stanley Beach. I've read that there were only five. Perhaps this was a matshed belonging to the Taikoo Sugar Refinery, the company for which Albert Dransfield worked. He is sitting left front next to Cicely Warren. His wife, Laura, is behind him next to her daughter, Dorothy. My uncle, Leslie Warren is at the back on the left. The Warren children would be about two and four respectively, dating the picture to 1928 or 1929. Albert seems to have a dachsund on a lead. Everyone seems very well dressed for a day at the beach.

ER Walch was an accountant with Lowe, Bingham & Matthews from about 1936-1941. Address in Jurors List for 1936 was The Peak Hotel. His 1937-1940 address is given as 20 Broadwood Road, usually known as The Towers. He is given as an auditor in Hong Kong in the 1941 Government Gazette. He married Dorothy Olivia Dransfield, daughter of Albert and Laura Dransfield on 20th April 1939 at the Union Church. <Read more ...>
According the Eulogy published in the Hong Kong Daily Press of 26 November 1940 Albert Dransfield died suddenly, aged 68, at his home in Broom Street, Happy Valley on 24 November 1940. He is described as a loyal member of the Methodist Church and energetic supporter of the Soldiers and Sailors Home. He was resident in Hong Kong for over 30 years according to the Eulogy. The Jurors Lists give him as Storekeeper and then Timekeeper at the Taikoo Sugar Refinery Company. <Read more ...>
