Western temporary vehicle ferry berth

Additional Ferry Berths

Originally in 1933, the pier was designed to serve one vehicular ferry at a time. Due to the increasing demand for vehicle transport, a second berth was built east of the old one (early 1950s).

The Annual Report for 1963 refers:

West of the present vehicle ferry pier, a temporary vehicle ferry berth was constructed, so that there are now three berths in action in the vicinity.

This photo shows the Jordan Road Temporary Vehicular Ferry Pier from 1960, not the older one from 1932.

Note that the mounting suspensions for the vehicle ramps are the same at Jordan Road and Rumsey Street on the island.

Amazing photograph showing all three Vehicular Ferry Piers with ferries in action. Additionally, a passenger ferry has berthed alongside the oldest vehicular ferry pier.

Cropped from Jordan Road Piers.

The photo shows a portal for lifting the bridge for the cars, a floating pier and finally the single-deck vehicular ferry. It looks as if it was (possibly only at this time) only used by trucks.

This aerial photograph shows Ferry Point Estate under construction, the Jordan Road Vehicular Ferry Pier and the Jordan Road Temporary Vehicular Ferry Pier. From around 1964.

The photo shows the high demand for vehicle transport: many cars waiting at the old vehicular ferry pier, and trucks for the temporary one - queuing all along Ferry Street. Also note the long queue of taxis.
