View of Hong Kong harbour, ca. 1907

Dear reader,

A photo album on which this photo is on the cover, is from 1918. Gwulo member moddsey helped me establish a date for this photo: ca. 1907. On the left John's Cathedral can be seen and in the centre and right there are the Naval Yards, with a new dockyard being finished in the centre.

A vague number 218 has been painted to the negative of the photo (lower left), which style might reveal the maker. Any suggestions?

Kind regards,

Pieter

This scene was the same as what I saw four years later when our President Wilson liner came to dock in Kobe, Japan.

Only just noticed one of the IFC towers being built on the left of this photo. I don't even remember seeing either IFC tower until 2007!

On the Lantau ferry from Central to Silvermine Bay (Mui Wo).

SS Tenyo Maru in Hong Kong harbour

Hong Kong harbour ca. November/December 1925. Note at the back of the photo says the passenger vessel is the SS Tenyo Maru, a Japanese ship (built in 1908 by Mitsubishi Dockyard & Eng. Works, Nagasaki for Toyo Kisen K.K., Tokyo and used on Hong Kong - Yokohama - San Francisco passenger services).

AESAREA-CAESAREA ex British Rail Cross Channel ferry-1982

A long way from its origins.

I photographed this apparently derelict ferry in 1982. It was moored in the outer harbour.

Built in Cowes, Isle of Wight, UK in 1960 as the CEASAREA for the British Transport Commission as a cross-channel ferry to be operated by British Rail.

It took this role principally on the long distance Weymouth-Jersey, Channel Isles route, but also operated on the shorter sea crossings to Boulogne and Calais.
