Detail of a Panorama taken in 1860 showing the coast of Wanchai prior to the reclamation to Johnston Road in the 1860's

On the hill in the foreground is the Chief Justice's House with the Seamans behind to the left.

The large building complex in the centre of the picture is the St. Francis Xavier Hospital & Chapel. The walled enclosure behind it is the Old Colonial Cemetery (likely Protestant section)

English Methodist Church at QRE in 1937

The photo shows the old English Methodist Church which was situated at junchtion of Queen's Road East and Kennedy Road.  It was taken in 1937.

The upper part of the pitched roof structure behind was a 3-storey building (edged green) located to the south west of the old Wanchai Government School (to the west of the Church) which was not visible because it was behind a series of trees fronting the QRE.

This air-photo was taken in 1949 which shows the English Methodist Church at j/o Kennedy Road and Queen's Road East, and the Wanchai Govt School at j/o Kennedy Street and QRE.

On 12 June 1966 (so called "612" incident) 382.8 mm (+15 inches) of rainfall was recorded in one day, being the highest record at that time.  Between 6:00 - 7:00 am, an hourly highest record of 108.2 mm rainfall was also recorded.   The heavy downpour made Hong Kong suffer one of the worst disastrous floods.

The composite photo shows the old (circa 1955) and the new (2013) of No. 269, Queen's Road East.   The present building is used as Education Services Centre of Education Bureau

On the left hand side, it shows the boundary wall and entrance iron gate of the old Wanchai School (part).   Adjacent to the iron gate is the big bayan tree.  The safty railing in front of the gate is to prevent children running across the road suddenly.

Queen's Road East is in the middle, and the retaining wall of the hospital hill (site of Royal Navy Hospital, later Ruttonjee Sanatorium) is on the right hand side.
