Christmas gift idea - a framed print of a Gwulo photo

I'd previously only offered unframed prints for sale, but earlier this year my sister-in-law moved to a new flat and I had a couple of my prints framed as a house-warming gift. I was very pleased with how they turned out, so in future Gwulo's prints are also available framed. (The unframed prints are still available, in case you have your own preferences for how you'd like them framed.)

Here's an example:

Framed Gwulo print

The prints are the type you see in art galleries and museums. The frame includes a two inch / five cm wide mat as the border, a classic black frame, and anti-reflective glass. For the image to be framed, you can choose from any of the photos in the online catalogue, and if you have my books you can also choose from any of the photos shown in them.

The price varies according to the size of the print, as follows:

  • Standard: longest side of printed image is 10 inches / 25 cm long
    • Print only @ HK$500
    • Framed print @ HK$1,500

  • Large: longest side of printed image is 15 inches / 37.5 cm long
    • Print only @ HK$900
    • Framed print @ HK$2,000

  • Extra-large: longest side of image is 20 inches / 50 cm long
    • Print only @ HK$1,500
    • Framed print @ HK$2,700

  • Custom: size according to your requirements, price to be confirmed

If you'd like to order one, please contact me (david@gwulo.com) and let me know which photo you've chosen, the size you'd like it printed, and whether you'd like to have it framed or unframed.

Please allow three weeks for printing and framing, so any orders for Christmas gifts will need to be placed by the end of November.

Haunted house on (3?) Cornwall St

Wondering about an abandoned house on Cornwall Street. I haven't been able to dig up anything about this house, why it's abandoned in such an affluent area - could someone who is more knowledgeable fill me in? Thanks.

Please Gwulo, could I once again ask for help?

Six years ago I asked for help to trace the final voyage to Sydney of my grandmother Hannah Mabel Warren.

Iron works factory producing manhole covers

There is an interesting story about manhole covers (also called inspection covers) of Hong Kong, published at the free Chinese tabloid AM730 on last Wednesday, 27 October 2021. I’m amazed to know that they are still MADE IN HONG KONG.

Two Well/Water structures North West of Jockey Club Mt. Davis Youth Hostel

We discovered a Ribbon Trail leading from Victoria Road at the end of Kennedy Town through the Kung Man Village Resettlement Village

all the way on a ridge to the Jockey Club Mr. Davis Youth Hostel. The recent Typhoon turned it into a machete wielding exercise but the path

is pretty clear now to use. Approaching the Hostel we came across 2 dilapidated structures in the jungle. They appear to be some kind of water

installation with their well like appearance.

Does anyone know what they were or when they were built/used?

80th anniversary events?

Hi all,

I am a comparative new comer to HK and was wondering if there were 80th anniversary (battle of HK) plans or events scheduled?

If not I suspect I will be organising something.

Many thanks!

Terra Verde (<1900 - ???)

Terra Verde was the home of Elly & Laura Kadoorie (Michael's grandparents) in 1900. Does anyone know where it was located?

Motor Torpedo Boat / "Wind Thunder Boat"

The MTBs that operated in Hong Kong pre 1941 were known by the locals to be extremely noisy vessels. Their powerful engines could be heard for miles !

In his book "Escape from the Japanese" Lt. Cdr. Ralph Goodwin notes that he heard the MTBs start up in Aberdeen, to flee for China,
from his bed in Queen Mary Hospital, some 4 kilometres away. He was injured and a patient there on December 25th, 1941, when the Colony surrendered.
