1933-34: Photos from Warren Swire's sixth visit to Hong Kong

It's three years to the day since I last wrote about Warren Swire's photos, so we're long overdue for another instalment. This batch of photos come from his visit to Hong Kong in 1933-34. He was keeping to his usual schedule of a visit every 4-5 years, having last visited in 1928-29, and was also keeping to his usual themes for the photos he took.

Industry at Quarry Bay

The Taikoo dockyard and sugar refinery always get a photo or two. This first photo, marked "Ship repairs" actually shows a submarine being worked on. I've seen photos of submarines in Hong Kong's dry docks before, but this is the first time I've seen one pulled up onto a slipway. The cable that pulls a vessel up the slipway and out of the water is shown running across the photo from the large winch on the right.

Thank You David

My hope is that this thread has been covered on more than one occasion before, but if not, it is high time it was. I am speaking to the matter of extending to you, David, my heartfelt thanks for the bottomless time and effort you put into operating this website. I cannot imagine how much of your life over what, 20+ years, you have committed to bringing people together to celebrate their ancestors and the unique and remarkable society that is Hong Kong.

New on Gwulo: 2021, week 35

I spent last month in the UK, sending our older daughter to start at university, and catching up with friends and family. I arrived back in Hong Kong yesterday.

Gwulo's newsletters were on pause while I was away, but since I'm stuck in my quarantine hotel room for the next three weeks, expect to see some extra issues!

Hong Kong under Japanese Occupation

For those interested, parts of the document "Hong Kong Under Japanese Occupation" can be read online here A list of public notices that appeared in the Hong Kong News between January and June 1942 can be viewed

Japanese war planes bomb Hong Kong - 21st February 1939

Japanese air raid bombs causing casualties first fell on Hong Kong on 8th December 1941? Apparently not.

Kowloon drydock large enough for 324-foot ship in 1941

I am trying to determine the drydock that held the American freighter Admiral Y.S. Williams just before the Japanese invasion in December 1941.  I know the ship was 324 feet long and that it was drydocked in Kowloon.  I assume this means the HK & Whampoa dockyard, but maybe the Cosmopolitan dockyard had a drydock large enough to take the Admiral Williams?  Does anyone know which drydocks in Kowloon could hold a ship of this size?

Hong Kong Under Military Government

I just want to post this link of a 244 page unclassified document for reference I found by acccident before I lose it by casually surfing onto another web page! This would be interesting for students of the history of the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong. Lots of hard to find information during this murky period of Hong Kong's history.

Delete photos uploaded in error

I have uploaded some pictures several times in general instead of to a Gallery. How do I remove those extra copies and photos that I should not have uploaded?
