Missions - early days

I've created this page so we can identify which buildings were used for which mission and the various names used for each. e.g. Berlin and Basel missions were different.

WWII Aircraft Crash sites in HK

Hi All. I just thought I would start a forum topic on this since I have seen it alot in the SCMP and other news outlets recently. It seems that not only downed Japanese plane wrecks could exist from the Battle of Hong Kong, but also. TBM Avenger wrecks have been found.

Here are 3 SCMP articles about TDM Avenger wrecks found in HK Island.

Star Ferry pre-1957

Hi

I am researching the pre-1957 Star Ferry, especially the Tsim Sha Tsui side. Would anyone be able to help with details, unique quirks, etc. I am also trying to determine the fare at the time. The closest I've come was 20c in 1959 - post move - does anyone know if this was the fare before the move, or if the move triggered an increase?

Greatly appreciate any and all comments!

The changing faces of the Star Ferry pier off Ice House Street

Two rounds of reclamation ago, the Star Ferry pier was at the junction of Connaught Road and Ice House Street. Here's how it looked when it opened in 1912:

Kowloon Ferry

It was a popular subject, so we've built up a sequence of 30+ photos showing it through to the 1950s. Let's see how it changed over the years.

Change #1 - Dome-topped clock tower added, 19??

This view is cropped from a larger photo, which shows the Central Fire Station under construction. That dates the photo to around 1925.

Change #2 - Dome removed from clock tower, 19??

Barbara Anslow remembers old Hong Kong. Part 2: 1938-42

In part 1, Barbara talked about her first visit to Hong Kong as a young girl, living here from 1927 to 1929.

In this part 2, Barbara tells us about returning to Hong Kong in 1938, then being evacuated with her mother and sisters in 1940. While in transit in the Philippines, they received news that her father had died suddenly, which meant they all returned to Hong Kong. They decided to stay here, and so were caught up in the Japanese invasion of December 1941, and the internment that followed.

But back to 1938 - the family were following her father who'd been posted to the Royal Navy's dockyard in Hong Kong. What brought him back to Hong Kong again? (Scroll down for additional notes and photos.)

Ship Street Structures. (Former Tung Chi College)

Hi all. I was on Ship Street in Wanchai this past friday and came accross a noteworthy site. As per the photos, these sites were very overgrown. They did appear to be some sort of military structures, but not like many I had seen. Appearing as a large series of bunkers partially embedded in the site of an incline face. After standing over a construction fence to take pictures for less than a minute I was told by a construction contractor that photos were prohibited.
