Wells and streams channels on HK Island

I have been conducting some research on the early water supply of Victoria City, and came across descriptions about the construction of 4 wells by the British government, as well as many more others by locals and foreign residents (For e.g. research publication by Dr. Pui-yin Ho from CUHK). Anyone knows where I could find historical images of such wells? Are there any remnants left at present?

Upper West Terrace c. 1880

Has anyone an idea where Upper West Terrace might have been c. 1880  - I suspect its somewhere Mid-levels-ish, and know that its not the Peak, but that's all ... thanks.

Where: The first clue is the sea wall in the distance, the edge of the Causeway Bay typhoon shelter. The second is this line of buildings with a gentle bend half way along:

Buildings at junction of Gordon & Electric Roads

The buildings have long gone, but that distinctive bend is still clear to see on a modern map. It's at the junction of

New mapping features on Gwulo

The first project from the 2016 to-do list is finished, an upgrade to the main map we use. Enhancements include:

  • 10x faster than the previous version
  • Markers and all the old paper maps are now on the same page
  • You can change the transparency of the old maps so it is easier to compare them with modern maps

Here's a video showing how it works (subscribers, if you can't see the video please click http://gwulo.com/node/30984 to view it on the website):

German Clock for Harbour Customs Building ca. 1910?

During their research for a book about the history of a German factory producing  clocktower-clocks, the authors came across a mention of a clock built for the “Hafenzollgebäude” in “Hongkong (China)” (Hafen = harbour, Zoll = customs, Gebäude = building).

They found it in a company publication dated 1928 and assume that it was meant for a building constructed around 1900. It might have been meant for a clock tower or for a building façade.

Old Hong Kong in the UK

Here's a summary of my recent visit to the UK, listing some resources for anyone interested in old Hong Kong.

A few interesting finds from this visit:

1850 Green Bank plans & map. UKNA ref: MPG 1/158

Friends of the RAS HK [UK-based]

We are a group of mostly ex-members of the Royal Asiatic Society in Hong Kong, now living in the U.K., who meet together for regular lectures in London as well as an annual Chinese New Year lunch in Chinatown and a weekend away during the summer, always with a Chinese theme.  Our lectures are on topics to do with the history of Hong Kong and China, and are always interesting.

Vincent Jarrett again

Stored 1920's Queen Road Central facade - which building ?

Can anyone help identify a dressed granite building facade from an old 1920s building in Queens Road Central which was demolished in the 1970s-80s and was subsequently stored in Pokfulam until recently.  Current location unknown. We do not know which building it was or have a photo.

Advice on where to post this question on Chinese language websites is very welcome.
