Gold Smuggling

Hello

I am writing a romantic mystery novel set in the 1960s (about two thirds the way through), and I need to find out some additional information about gold smuggling in and out of Hong Kong in the 1960s.  I have found an old 'Asia Times' article on the Web about the 'fixed exchange rate' at that time.  To get round this, gold was bought legally on the London gold market and then exported to Macau where it was recast into shapes suitable for smuggling back.

The Prominent Chinese in Hongkong (1937) electronic version

This is a good resource for biographical information of Chinese community leaders in the 1930s, but of course everything said is positive.

Pictures of Tavern district

I have spent some time looking through everything from ebay to obscure picture collections in American Universities for pictures taken around 1870/80 of the HK Tavern District.

My great grandfather had a place called The National Tavern on Queen's Road Central at that time. David has kindly worked out that it stood where today a building called 338 Apartments is. However, as my knowledge of HK streets and the changes that have taken place over the years would easily fit on the head of a pin, I am somewhat at a loss when looking at old pictures.

Soldier

Hi

I have a photo of a soldier taken at a studio (39a Queens Road HongKong). It's in a mount that is embossed and the studio name appears to be A Omsby (or something similar)

RAF WW2 reconnaissance photos being digitised.

The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland is digitising the (UK) National Collection of Aerial Photography.

This includes RAF reconnaisance photos from WW2 from all over the world.

They haven't got round to Hong Kong, yet.

I've emailed them to ask when they might. I'll keep everyone updated
