8750 Tai Po Road, Piper's Hill

Hi all,

Just added a new place on the map: http://gwulo.com/node/15988

This is a building at Tai Po Road, Piper's Hill. It looks like a residential building from maybe the 1950s; anyone knows more about it? Who owned it/lived there, when was it built, etc. It's in pretty decent shape considering the obvious lack of maintenance. Doors are locked with newish looking padlocks, winders are intact, I didn't try to find a way in.

c.1961 Cine-film of Hong Kong

Many thanks to Tania Scott for sharing her family's cine films.

They were taken by her father, David Scott, between 1960 - 1962. He was in Hong Kong with the RAF on a two year posting.

My favourites are the shots of boats where he's so low you think he must be whizzing along in a speed-boat, but then... well, see if you get the same surprise I did!

A time-line of Hong Kong car registration / licence plates

Thanks to Victor Brumby for sending this information about when different the different series of car registration numbers were issued. Victor writes a blog with lots more about the subject, Europlate blog: Registration Plates of the World.

Here's the story for Hong Kong:

Cars and other 4- (or more-) wheeled vehicles

It is unknown when the first Hong Kong vehicle registrations took place. Probably before 1910.

Crashed Plane in Tai Tam

I see that Craig has finally made the news with his project. It's in the SCMP.

Congrats to Craig for a job well done.

Old Hong Kong Telephone Numbering System

I was testing my memory on the captioned subject and double checked in wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telephone_numbers_in_Hong_Kong

However, I was puzzled by the claim that for New Territories numbers, '12' was replaced by '0'.  Wasn't it the other way round?

Grateful if anyone can clear this up for me.  Many thanks!

American aerial photography from wartime raids over Hong Kong

These photos are interesting to see, both as a record of the fighting, and as a view of Hong Kong in the 1940s.

I don't know much about them, but here are the few I've heard of:

Pillboxes on the mainland

Thanks to Rob Weir for the latest instalment from his records of British military sites in Hong Kong. Here's a map of their locations:

Started 1917, pg 9-31

This is the latest Jurors List we're making searchable - here's how to join in, it'll only take around 20-30 minutes of your time.

We'll take the previous year's spreadsheet, then work through it page-by-page and edit in any changes so it matches this year's Jurors List.

Step 1. Check the comments below to see which was the last page someone has started typing. You'll work on the next page. eg if the last comment is "started page 15", you'll be working on page 16.

1916 Jurors List

[The list has been typed up by volunteers: David, Grace, Patricia, and Stephen. Please help us type up the lists from other years - it takes less than 30 minutes to finish a page. Click here for details.]
