Photos of old Hong Kong and the tales they tell - Volume 2

This hour-long talk takes you on a trip around old Hong Kong, using photos from the late 1800s and early 1900s.

This is the second talk, and has photos grouped into four sections:

North Point Refugee Camp Jan - June 1939

A relative of mine, Miss Elsie Laura Beckingsale, was a senior administrrator at the above camp.  I have some photos of the refugees, the huts and some children exercising, forming the chinese character for North Point.  Also I have a superb orange silk banner made for Elsie (Laura) by the refugees thanking her for all her help and given to her when she left the camp to return to England.

Does anyone have any information or pictures of this camp at this particular time.

Diocesan Schools Timeline

Here's a timeline for the history of the Diocesan schools for boys and girls, taken from the girls' school's history page, and a document about the boys' school's history.

The girls' school's history page gives the impression it has existed since the initial foundation in 1860.

Diocesan Girls' School Church in 1890s

I'd be grateful to know if the Diocesan Girls' School was associated with a particular church in the 1890s. I'm looking for a marriage record of my grandmother, who attended the school, and also a christening record of her first child. Her subsequent children were baptised into the Catholic church, as my grandfather converted to the Roman Catholic faith. I have already eliminated St John's.

Who was Arbuthnot Road named after?

Arbuthnot Road runs downhill from Caine Road to Wyndham Street / Hollywood Road, running in front of the Magistracy.

Wikipedia says:

It is likely that it was not named or created until the 1850s or later; it was named after George Arbuthnot.

Wikipedia also has an entry for George Arbuthnot:

Looking for Roger Houghton

Hi, I am looking for the contact details of a good friend of mine, Roger B Houghton, who I know has contributed to this website. We were in the HK police force together in 1960's. I am in hK until beginning of April and would like to touch base with him. Any help much appreciated. Thanks Steve Fleming

Miss Wylie was a newspaper reporter on the SCMP (one of the first). She was the only daughter of Ben and Mima Wylie. Ben Wylie was General Manager of SCMP. He was interned in Stanley during the war. His wife and daughter were evacuated to Australia in 1940 along with most other wives and children.
