Gwulo meetup, next Wednesday 9th

Chris Yuen (Gwulo username 'C') is visiting Hong Kong and hopes to meet some other Gwulo regulars:

I wonder if you meet regularly and whether I can join the next one.  I will be in HK for about 3 weeks around Christmas and New Year's.  It would be great to meet up with you, philk, 80sKid, aetse, moddsey, tngan and Lawrence Tsui (I believe the latter two are fellow alumni of Wah Yan College) as well as other contributors.

The Industrial History of Hong Kong Group

This group, formed in November 2012, is for anyone who has an interest in the Industrial History of Hong Kong. From textiles to trams, salt to shipbuilding, it’s a fascinating part of HK’s history. We cover manufacturing, transport, utilities, mining and quarrying, telecommunications and aspects of fishing and agriculture.

Our website was launched in October 2013:

Gwulo in 2013

Thank you for your support in 2012, and special thanks to everyone who has contributed to the website. With your help, it has grown to over 11,000 pages. That in turn attracts more visitors, so that in 2012 the website passed one million page views for the first time. Not quite Gangnam Style, but I'm very happy to see it!

I wish you a very Happy New Year,

Best regards, David

How did last year's plans turn out?

Mount Nicholson

Does anybody know the origins of the name Mount Nicholson or where I might find out why it is called that?

Exploring Mount Davis & Lung Fu Shan

If you're making use of the cool weather to get out exploring, here are four interesting sites to visit. I saw them just before Christmas, on an outing with regular Gwulo contributor Thomas, and local historian Mr Chan.

The first site we visited was the ...

'Position finding cell' on Lung Fu Shan

Lung Fu Shan is a small hill above Hong Kong University, and below the Pinewood Battery. On its northern slope, with an excellent view over the harbour, are four military buildings, connected by a stone staircase. Here's a look inside one of those buildings:

And a view up the staircase:

Wilfred Mulcahy

Hi all,

As yet, I'm no closer to finding out where and when my parents married.  However, I'd like to thank everyone who has helped me to learn how my father fared before and during the occupation - it's meant a great deal to me.

HONGKONG 1960 SERVICEMAN

I am a newcomer to this site. I dont particularly want to start s new item - I expect many of the things I know something about have already been discussion topics, but its a way of getting started.

I was in HK as a national serviceman in1959/61 stationed in Victoria barracks , Wanchai.

I knew the Fleet Club well.  I have a small number of photos and various memories if there is anyone interested.
