"Line of Gaps" pillboxes on Hongkong Island

Thanks to Rob Weir for the latest instalment from his records of British military sites in Hong Kong. Here's a map of their locations:

Is Gwulo too slow?

I think so!

I've been trying a few changes over the last few weeks to make the site faster, but it's still running too slowly.

Change is afoot

The next round of changes will mostly affect visitors who aren't logged in. I'll replace the "What's new" block on the left of the screen with something that takes less computer power to build. It will also allow me to use more caching, which hopefully will speed things up for all of us.

HKA Grade 5 - Global Issues Unit - Sai Kung

Hi,

This may be a long shot but here goes. I'm a teacher at HK Academy in Kennedy Town. Next year our school is moving to Sai Kung and in an effort to prepare students for the transition we'd like to integrate a field trip to Sai Kung into our next 'unit of inquiry' about global issues. Given your unique knowledge of HK we were wondering if you might be able to help us look at Sai Kung from this perspective.

I'm not sure which global issue we might look at but perhaps "preservation of culture identity" or something related an environmental issues might work.

UK National Archives Release Old Photographs of Asia - on Flickr

Hi,

Just thought I’d let you know that hundreds of old photos, many of Hong Kong are now available for FREE from the UK National Archives on their Flickr website (link below).  Please do pass this on to anyone else who might be interested, a wonderful resource with some rare images.

Gwulo talks: 26 Sep & 2 Nov

I'll be giving a couple of talks in the next few weeks, and you're welcome to attend. The format is the same for each - I'll bring along my PC with a selection of scanned old photos, project them onto a big screen, and talk about the stories behind each photo.

Wednesday, 26 September

I'll be speaking to the OMRS (Orders and Medals Research Society):

George Tan / Carrian Saga

Hi Everybody,

I just joined this site because of the fascinating post on Carrian entitled "A chapter of scandals, and the rise of the 1997 issue". Since I was quite young at the time, I don't know much about this saga. After having done some research, I would like to ask:

1. Does anyone know where to get any copies of the following books on Carrian Saga or willing to sell/share:

(a) The Carrian Files by Philip Bowring;

(b) Carrian: Robed Men of Justice by Hector Lee (cd only);

For boat lovers

A nice friendly chap gave me this link today. Thought it was quite interesting, especially the pics of Mui Wo that show the background in pretty good detail.

2012-10 Welcome to 蘋果日報 readers

If you're visiting after reading the article in today's 蘋果日報 / Apple Daily, welcome to 古老 / Gwulo!

Here's the link to the main page about Japanese Wartime Tunnels in Hong Kong. If you've heard family stories of local men digging these tunnels, please can you tell them to us?

Here's a link to the animated map showing Hong Kong's development over the years.

Wed - Lunch with Sharon on Sir Thomas Jackson of HSBC

Sharon Oddie Brown, a Canadian who is a direct descendant of the SISTER of Sir Thomas Jackson of HSBC fame (his statue is the only one in Statue Square in Central) will be visiting Hong Kong 15-24 November 2012.  She is writing a book on the life and times of her famous relative, where he lived on the Peak, where his wife played tennis, how he lived, what his family was like. Her personal archives contain much of Jackson's personal letters and memorabilia.  Her research to date can be found at www.thesilverbowl.com.

King's Road in 1936

I've been looking through some of the "Alterations in house numbers" lists in the HJGRO. This one from 1936 is for King's Road, and as well as house numbers it also gives some useful information about what was along that section of the road. here are some that caught my eye (click here for the full document):
