Cycling in Hong Kong

Hi Everyone, I am interested in the history of cycling in Hong Kong. I am sure cycling was very common at some time in the past, but obviously the practice has not really survived. I'd love to know why? Is it because the people preferred cars? Is it because the governments didn't choos to accomodate cycling with its infrastructure?

I can imagine Nathn Road, and Hennessey Road being full of bicycles, and its really a pity it isnt that way now.

Royal Naval Dockyards 1875

I'm wondering if anyone can direct me to where I might be able to find information about people who worked at the Royal Naval Dockyards in 1875. I have tried the UK National Archives but they have no records. I am trying to trace a man called Joseph William Barnes. In 1875, he had a son named Francis Henry Barnes who was born in the Canton Bazaar. On Francis' birth certificate, Joseph is listed as a Sergeant in the Royal Naval Dockyards Police but I have no idea where I might find records that might help me to find out more about who this man was.

Tanner Family in Stanley Camp

I would be very pleased to hear from anyone who knew or has information of the Tanner family who were interred in Stanley during the Second World War, and in particular about their son Barry who was born in the camp in 1944. Thanks to Geoff Emerson I have the information that left HK on the SS Empress of Australia, but at that point the trail goes cold.  Many thanks in advance for any help with this.

Gwulo dinner next Wednesday.

Hi,

A few of us are getting together for dinner next Wednesday 29th. If you'd like to join us, you're very welcome. Currently we've got Patricia O'Sullivan (visiting from UK), and local Gwulo regulars Phil, Moddsey, Thomas, and me. All very informal, just a chance to get together for a chat.

We'll meet at 7:30 for a chinese meal. Haven't fixed where yet, but it'll be somewhere near an MTR station. If you'd like to join us, please send me an email by email by Sunday evening so we can book.

Tracing relatives in Macao

I am in the process of trying to find out how my great grand father John Olson arrived in HK in the early 1860s. He died there in 1918 without, to my knowledge ever leaving again.
