old taxi photo and wara-wara photo (1950s)

Just wonder whether there are any photos of old taxi and wara-wara in 1950s.

Can anyone help?

Photos of Mercantile Bank and Holland House

Has anyone come across photos of the Mercantile Bank Building (7 Queen's Road Central) and Holland House (9 Queen's Road Central)?  Both were demolished in the late 1980s to make way for the present 9 Queen's Road Central building.

Ouch! HKGRO links have stopped working

It looks as though HKGRO have changed the paths to their files. eg the Started 1916, pg56-76 page links to the 1916 Jurors list at http://sunzi1.lib.hku.hk/hkgro/view/G1916/48531.pdf

But that no longer works. Now the link to the 1916 list is:

Hong Kong Art Club / Victoria Riding School / Credit Foncier D'Extreme Orient

Hello,

I am doing some research on old Hong Kong and would like to get as much information as I can on the following:

1. The Hong Kong Art Club between 1930 and 1940. I am particularly interested in membership names, but also any history.

2. The Victoria Riding School in Hung Hom. I don't think it was in business for very long, maybe sometime between 1932 and 1936?

3. Some history of Credit Foncier D'Extreme Orient on their operation in Hong Kong, particularly from 1930 until they ceased operations. I knew some of the executives in postwar years.

Regards,

You're invited: David will give a talk on 2nd November

Photo header
I'll show a selection of my favourite photos of old Hong Kong, and tell their stories. The venue has a good projector & a big screen, and I'll bring along high-resolution scans of the photos so we can zoom in to see their detail.

The talk is arranged by the Royal Asiatic Society (RAS), as part of their series of regular talks. Here's their announcement:

Visiting HK - How to see old military sites?

I've been asked by email:

I would be very happy to discover during one or two days some examples of coastal batteries and command posts pillboxes (gin drinker's line ) and perhaps shing mun redoubt.

Is it possible to meet somebody in HK who accepts to show me some examples of theses fortresses I could show him something similar if he comes to France.

Dodwells Ridge Camp

Hi

I have just come back from Sheung Shu, Hong Kong.  We went with my father who served in the british army in 1960.  It was a very emotional journey for us as he left here 50 years ago. We were unable to establish exactly were Dodwells Ridge Camp was, after going back twice we belive that the hospital was built on it.  I would be very greatfull if anybody can provide me with anymore information or contacts who might of served at the same time.

Regards

Karen

New website

For anybody interested I have just put up a new website www.amanfromkarlshamn.com which tells the story of my great grandfather John Olson who arrived in Hong Kong around 1860 and died there in 1918.

A lot of the information has come through the expertise and knowledge of the Gwulo community and I would like to thank you all very much. David has been a tremendous help but those of you who have answered queries I have posted, or indeed posted relevant material, will recognise themselves I hope.
