Relationships with the Local Staff

Upon being assigned to the Hong Kong Head Office, or, for that matter, any of the Corporation's other branches in Asia, a junior officer should make it his first duty to learn the customs and culture of the locality in as short a time as possible.

Protect Government Hill

Hi,

You may or may not know that the Government is planning to sell half of the Central Government Offices at Battery Path and Ice House Street.  I, and the Government Hill Concern Group, want to stop them - and protect this very historic site by changing the zoning to put a cap on building heights to no higher than the existing buildings and designating the whole area a "special historical protected area".

Crown Wine Cellars & Bunker Hunting Any help appreciated

Dear Guys

I stumbled upon your superb website the other day. I live in the uk and have visited HK a few times in the past, mostly for holidays. I belong to a group in the UK called Subterranea Britannica or subbrit. It is a club for people interested in underground and military complexes.

I am due to be in Hong Kong in 2 weeks time, I suddenly thought that there maybe some interesting underground structures. Especially as it was in British hands for so long. I would imagine there are many people who were based or worked in such areas.

Capital of the crown colony / dependent territory

What's the capital of the crown colony (dependent territory from the early 1980s onwards with the passage of the new act)? How were capitals defined in British colonies?

Getting to Hong Kong in the 19th Century

I would be most grateful for any advice about travel to HK in the 1850s-60s. I know there were tea clippers and also assume that, as the Colony had a big garrison, there must have been some regular ships (perhaps naval) calling and particular routes taken.

Any information pre 1869 and the opening of the Suez Canal would be appreciated as would a source of passenger lists. Thanks.

Sean

Can I edit the description of a photograph I have previously posted on Gwulu?

Can I change this?

And How?

1909 - The Portuguese return

Portuguese names suddenly disappeared from the Jurors Lists in 1903. Several reasons why have been suggested, but we still don't have a firm answer.

Now in 1909 they're back again. Here's how many times a given name appears in each year's Jurors List:

Hong Kong police in the 1920s

Hello

I'm currently writing a fiction book, where one of the characters is an ex-Hong Kong policeman. He would have been based there in the 1920s.

I have found lots of general information about HK in those times, which seem to have been very eventful, but I would really like to get hold of some material specifically about the police force. Most of the books I have found are from later on in the 1950s or 1960s.

It's the day to day detail I need, such as routine, ranks of police, the structure, duties etc. Anything would be useful.

This is the latest Jurors List we're making searchable - here's how to join in, it'll only take around 20-30 minutes of your time.

The job is to take the previous year's list, then work through it page-by-page and edit in any changes so it matches this year's list.

Step 1. Check the comments below to see which was the last page someone has started typing. You'll work on the next page. eg if the last comment is "started page 7", you'll be working on page 8.
