In the Web

I have been searching in vain for some time now for a copy of Peter Hall's book In the Web.

I am interested in the book of course, but also want to know whether there is any mention in it of my great grandfather John Olson who married Ching Ah Fung in the early 1890s and had four children with her.

If any Gwulo addict has a copy of the book I would appreciate them having a quick scan through the index! Any info would be appreciated.

Identity of a comprador

I wonder has anybody come across a Tang Leong Kok who is named at my great grandfather John Olson's comprador in the 1880s.

He is identified as such by Carl Smith. Perhaps his name has cropped up elsewhere or his family prospered from the relationship.

Hong Kong Cemetery

Today I spend a day at the Happy Valley Cemetery. Thanks to Patricia Lim it is now so easy to spot the graves! I have already a collection of german graves from the time I lived in Hong Kong. But now I could add a lot more. I took over 100 photos, sweaty and thirsty in the baking sun. Coming to Hong Kong for my vacation from a mediocre summer in Germany, I enjoyed the heat and the humidity. But I had one problem: how can I get to the area opposite Aberdeen Tunnel; i.e. Sections: 37, 38... If anyone could help I would be happy to bake again in Happy Valley.

Blue Books

I've seen several mentions of these Blue Books as sources, and finally had a chance to look at them earlier this month. They're another good resource if you're looking for information about people who lived in Hong Kong.

I'll talk about that some more, look at where to find them, and end with some more general information about the books.

Writers in Hong Kong, February 1938

In February 1938 three of Britain's most eminent writers were in Hong Kong.

The poet W. H. Auden and the novelist Christopher Isherwood were on their way to the mainland to write a book on the Sino-Japanese War. They stayed with Duncan Sloss (University Vice Chancellor) and met Sir Vandeleur Grayburn and others.

Chungking mansions

Hello! Chungking mansions turn 50 this autumn, and I am working on a story for the SCMP. I am looking for people who stayed there a while ago and could tell me their experience of the place. Please email me at: helene.franchineau@scmp.com

Many thanks!

hk govt quarters

not sure best place to post this: anyway interesting 1987 memo from the commissioner of rating and valuation to the secretary for the civil service about how much to charge for government properties.

Dutch roots in Hong Kong

The Central and Western District Council has agreed with a proposal to sign post ‘Dutch Lane’ with a display explaining the history - it will go up later in 2011. I discovered this lane just up from Bowen Road around 2000 when I used to live in the area. Locals using the path told me they called it

In The Web by Peter Hall

I have been looking for a copy of this book off and on for some time as I remember Liz Chater posting a message saying it was being updated by the author. Has this happened I wonder?

I have had no luck so far and would appreciate it if anybody could point me in the right direction. Better still, if anybody is in contact with Mr Hall I would very much like my interest to be passed on to him.

David can tell him how to reach me.

Thanks,

Sean
