The curious case of Y.C Liang (CBE)

I've just been involved in an interesting exchange on my blog concerning the old GPO pillars that we discovered had been moved to Kwun Yam Shan inside Kadoorie Farm in Tai Po. Anyway, the chat got quite interesting and I figured it would be nice if any of the local readers on Gwulo can shed some light on to the findings.

HK Tramway's Managers

This question arrived by email:

I have an idea on making a list of the managers of HK Tramways, however there is lack of information. Has someone in gwulo website contributed such knowledge or having worked in the tramways company?

We don't have that list - does anyone else know if it has been compiled already?

Can you recommend a good scanner?

By email:

Would you be able to recommend the best make of scanner for scanning old black and white photos, some of them curly? I've been recommended a Canon 9500 for reproducing the colour pictures that I normally use for my Powerpoint presentations, but I've noticed a review saying that it isn't good for enhancing old, maybe scratched black and white photos and especially not negatives. Grateful if you have a recommendation.

Where is Magistracy Street located?

Does anyone know the exact location of "Magistracy Street, Victoria Hong Kong" in 1840s? Also, who is J. Dos Anjos Xavier?

Ho Hok Shan - on site (photos added)

Hi there,

I am on the slope of Ho Hok Shan, facing approximately SW right now. In the past 20 minutes or so I have walked along and acrossed quite a few trenches. They are mostly over growned and some of the slopes are quite steep. The hill is nothing that tall, but it feel great up here despite the smog. I will go up the top of the hill before making the decision of going to Nam San Wai or about turn and make for Tai Lam, or even Tsuen Wan. Photos would have to wait.

More later.

Hong Kong Cricket Club in the years leading up to WW2

I am researching a book and am interested in the social side to the Hong Kong Cricket Club in the years leading up to World Ward 2. I am also keen to see any photos of the inside of the old building. Hong Kong is reputed to have been quite racist pre war and I would like to know how this manifested itself at the cricket club. The first eleven after all played against mix raced teams and as far as I know also included players who were not white or British. How did this play out given the morality of the times? Was there any 'apartheid' evident in the club facilities?

History of Clear water Bay Rd

Could anybody tell me when the original Clearwater Bay Rd was built?

I am under the impression it was well before the war and was a military road along which there were various amunition depots. It must have gone then to the end of the peninsular as the Seventh Day Adventist college ( Sam Yuk Middle School) bought 40 acres of land at their  current site in 1937.

You're invited: David will give a talk on 16th November

I'll show a selection of my favourite photos of old Hong Kong, and tell their stories. The venue has a good projector & a big screen, so I'm looking forward to showing the photos at their best.

The talk is arranged by the Royal Asiatic Society (RAS), as part of their series of regular talks. Here's the description from the RAS newsletter:
