1946-7 Hedda Morrison's photos

Hedda Morrison took several hundred photos of Hong Kong in 1946-7. Harvard University has a large collection of her photos, and high resolution copies can be seen on their HOLLIS web site. This link should show you the full collection, and then you can narrow it down by date, etc. if needed:

What is good software for cleaning up old photos?

I've used these programs at different times:

1935-7 James McAndrew's photos

I'm always pleased to see new collections of old photos, but this came at an even better time than usual. We moved house last week, and between packing, unpacking and cleaning, there hasn't been any time to get a new photo ready.

So I was very pleased to hear from Alan, who said he'd recently scanned in several photos from his father-in-law's album, was visiting Hong kong, and would I like to see them.

Yes please!

Here's a sample, the Bank of East Asia building decorated for King George VI's coronation on 12 May 1937:

'Commercial Radio' - Start up music HK - early 1970s.

A long shot this one: I lived in HK from birth (1964) to 1985.

in the mid 1970s I'd wake up every day - in our 9th floor apartment in La Hacienda, Mount Kellett Road, The Peak -  to the English language version of Commercial Radio. For a few mins before the 6am news that started their broadcasting day, they would play a tune - classical, mellow tune with oboes or clarinets & violins/cellos.

I am trying to track down this tune!!! Very nostalgic connotations. If anyone knows what I'm on about...let me know, any clues very much appreciated.

This will be an interesting guided walk, and you'll support a good cause at the same time:

Escape from HK in 1941

Just picked up a brief piece about an escape from HK in 1941 on BBC Radio 4.

Involved a Chinese admiral with one leg and British SOE forces! Unfortunately did not hear it all but it may be of interest to some Gwulo regulars.

The programme was Excess Baggage, BBC Radio 4, Saturday morning here (Ireland) at 10.30 and I expect that a Podcast will be avilable for download shortly, if not already, at http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/podcasts/

Defence against the PLA, 1949 onwards?

The page about trenches on Ho Hok Shan raises some questions:

http://gwulo.com/node/9503

If the British administration was indeed anticipating a Chinese invasion from 1949 onwards, did they manage to pull together a coherent defence plan?

What official conclusions did they draw from the defeat of Christmas 1941?

2011-11 CNNGO interview

A big thankyou to local writer Jason Beerman for this interview and write-up:

Stanley Village, Sea and Sky Court

Hi

Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed Kirsten's article about Stanley and Sea and Sky Court in the 1970s.  It brought back many memories - particularly of the 'scent' of the rice-wine factory on the corner of the market, going round to Sea and Sky.
